Having learned to knit as a teenager, Cheryl Atkinson discovered early that knitting was the perfect way to relieve stress, be creative and bond with like-minded souls. During the 1980s Cheryl taught knitting at Needles and Pins, in Vincennes, for Laura Daugherty, where her love of all thing fiber was greatly expanded and she dreamed of opening her own yarn shop one day. In August 2004, Cheryl fulfilled her dream after retiring from nursing and opened Atkinson Farm Yarns, in her husband’s childhood farm house.
Cheryl has always been a creative soul, from an early age she has enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading and gardening. She often wonders if she had missed her calling as a Home Economics teacher. Since opening the shop her creative side has once again been explored when she took up the art of weaving, spinning and rug-hooking. Small needles and complicated projects are Cheryl’s favorite ways to challenge herself with her knitting. Cheryl is an extremely patient teacher and resourceful guide as she encourages all new and experienced knitters to challenge themselves with their knitting projects.
When not knitting or enjoying one of her many favorite past-times, she can be found spending time with her husband Bill and the yarn shop mascot, their miniature Dachshund Miss Purl. Cheryl has plenty of reasons to knit, besides just the enjoyment it brings her, she has 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter that provide inspiration for many knitting projects.
As a member of TNNA, TKGA and the Dayton Knitting Guild, Cheryl continues to hone her fiber skills as she brings new and inventive techniques to her classes at Atkinson Farm Yarns.
As Cheryl’s daughter and mother of two of Cheryl’s grandchildren, Jess has little spare time to explore the fiber world while she is the administrative force behind the scenes in Atkinson Farm Yarns and Atkinson Trenching. While chairing philanthropic community activities such as Shop with a Cop at Christmas time, Jess finds time to be involved with her church, the Hazleton Ball League and still be a student at Vincennes University as she dual majors in Accounting and Business Administration.
